Formulas and Key Relations

Place Value & Expanded Form

468.356 = 400 + 60 + 8 + 0.3 + 0.05 + 0.006

Operations with Decimals

Addition/Subtraction: Align decimal points

Multiplication: Total decimal places = sum of decimal places in both numbers

Division: Convert divisor to whole number by multiplying both by 10, 100, etc.

Rounding Off Decimals

Rounding to nearest whole: Check tenths digit

Rounding to 1 decimal place: Check hundredths digit

Rounding to 2 decimal places: Check thousandths digit

Types of Decimal Fractions

Equivalent decimals

Have the same value even if the number of digits differs (e.g., 0.5 = 0.50 = 0.500).

Comparing and Rounding Off Decimals

Rounding to nearest whole number

Look at tenths digit. If <5, keep whole number same; if ≥5, add 1.

Rounding to nearest tenth

Look at hundredths digit. If <5, keep tenths digit same; if ≥5, add 1 to tenths digit.

Tenths = 1/10, Hundredths = 1/100, Thousandths = 1/1000

Key relations

For example, 3/10 = 0.3, 25/100 = 0.25.
