Understanding Decimal Fractions

  • A decimal fraction has a denominator of 10, 100, 1000, etc.
  • It is written with a decimal point (.) separating the whole number and the fractional part.
  • Digits after the decimal point are read one by one (e.g., 0.25 is 'zero point two five').
2

Place Value and Expanded Form

  • Each digit in a decimal number has a place value: Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones, Tenths, Hundredths, Thousandths.
  • The decimal point separates the whole number part from the decimal part.
  • Expanded form breaks down a decimal number into the sum of the value of each digit.
3

Types of Decimal Fractions

  • Like decimals: Have the same number of digits after the decimal point.
  • Unlike decimals: Have different number of digits after the decimal point.
  • Equivalent decimals: Have the same value even if the number of digits differs (e.g., 0.5 = 0.50 = 0.500).
4

Comparing and Rounding Off Decimals

  • To compare decimals, first compare the whole number part. If they are equal, compare the tenths, then hundredths, and so on.
  • Rounding to nearest whole number: Look at tenths digit. If <5, keep whole number same; if ≥5, add 1.
  • Rounding to nearest tenth: Look at hundredths digit. If <5, keep tenths digit same; if ≥5, add 1 to tenths digit.
