  • Decimal fractions have denominators like 10, 100, 1000.
  • They are written using a decimal point (.)
  • Digits after the decimal are read one by one: 0.25 is 'zero point two five', not 'twenty-five'.
  • Place values after decimal: tenths, hundredths, thousandths
  • Tenths = 1/10, Hundredths = 1/100, Thousandths = 1/1000
  • Each place is 10 times smaller than the one before it
  • Expanded form shows the value of each digit
  • We can write using decimals or fractions

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The number 0.50 is greater than 0.5 because it has more digits after the decimal.

When adding decimals, align the numbers from the right, just like in whole number addition.

0.3 is the same as 0.03 because both have 3 after the decimal.
