Card 1What is Matter?

What is matter?

Answer

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Everything around us—like books, water, and air—is made of matter.

Card 2States of Matter

Name the three states of matter.

Answer

The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. For example: ice (solid), water (liquid), and steam (gas).

Card 3Properties of Solids

Why can't we compress a solid easily?

Answer

Solids have tightly packed molecules with very little space between them. This makes it hard to squeeze or compress them.

Card 4Properties of Liquids

Why do liquids take the shape of their container?

Answer

Liquids have loosely packed molecules that can move around. They flow and take the shape of the container they are poured into, but their volume stays the same.

Card 5Properties of Gases

Why does a gas fill the entire room when released?

Answer

Gas molecules are far apart and move quickly in all directions. They spread out to fill all the available space, so the gas spreads throughout the room.

Card 6Examples of Matter

Give two examples each of solids, liquids, and gases.

Answer

Solids: book, chair. Liquids: milk, oil. Gases: air, cooking gas. These are all forms of matter found in daily life.

Card 7Change of State - Melting

What happens when ice is heated?

Answer

When ice is heated, it melts and changes into water. This process is called melting. It occurs at 0°C.

Card 8Change of State - Evaporation

What is evaporation?

Answer

Evaporation is the process in which a liquid changes into gas on heating. For example, water turns into steam when boiled.
