Main Parts of the Circulatory System
- The circulatory system has three main parts: heart, blood, and blood vessels.
- The heart pumps blood throughout the body.
- Blood carries oxygen, nutrients, and waste products.
Structure and Function of Blood
- Blood is made up of plasma and blood cells.
- Plasma is the liquid part of blood, mostly water with dissolved substances.
- There are three types of blood cells: Red Blood Cells (RBCs), White Blood Cells (WBCs), and Platelets.
Types of Blood Vessels
- Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure.
- Veins carry blood back to the heart under low pressure and have valves.
- Capillaries are tiny vessels where exchange of gases, nutrients, and wastes occurs between blood and cells.
The Heart and Its Working
- The heart is a muscular organ shaped like a fist, located slightly left in the chest.
- It has four chambers: two upper atria and two lower ventricles.
- Right side of heart handles deoxygenated blood; left side handles oxygenated blood.
