Main Parts of the Circulatory System

  • The circulatory system has three main parts: heart, blood, and blood vessels.
  • The heart pumps blood throughout the body.
  • Blood carries oxygen, nutrients, and waste products.

Structure and Function of Blood

  • Blood is made up of plasma and blood cells.
  • Plasma is the liquid part of blood, mostly water with dissolved substances.
  • There are three types of blood cells: Red Blood Cells (RBCs), White Blood Cells (WBCs), and Platelets.

Types of Blood Vessels

  • Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure.
  • Veins carry blood back to the heart under low pressure and have valves.
  • Capillaries are tiny vessels where exchange of gases, nutrients, and wastes occurs between blood and cells.

The Heart and Its Working

  • The heart is a muscular organ shaped like a fist, located slightly left in the chest.
  • It has four chambers: two upper atria and two lower ventricles.
  • Right side of heart handles deoxygenated blood; left side handles oxygenated blood.
