Topics in Human Body: Respiratory System

1

Main Parts of the Respiratory System

  • The respiratory system consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.
  • The nose filters, warms, and moistens the air we breathe using hair and mucus.
  • The pharynx is a common passage for both air and food.
2

Breathing vs Respiration

  • Breathing is the physical process of taking in oxygen (inhalation) and giving out carbon dioxide (exhalation).
  • Respiration is a biochemical process where cells use oxygen to break down glucose and release energy (ATP).
  • Breathing happens in the lungs; respiration happens in all body cells.
3

Mechanism of Breathing

  • Breathing involves two steps: inhalation and exhalation.
  • During inhalation: ribs move up and out, diaphragm flattens, chest cavity expands, and air rushes in.
  • During exhalation: ribs move down and in, diaphragm becomes dome-shaped, chest cavity shrinks, and air is pushed out.
4

Gaseous Exchange and Transport

  • Oxygen from inhaled air diffuses from alveoli into blood capillaries.
  • Haemoglobin in red blood cells carries oxygen to all body cells.
  • Carbon dioxide, a waste product, diffuses from blood into alveoli and is exhaled.
