Types of Articles
- There are two types of articles: indefinite (a, an) and definite (the).
- Indefinite articles 'a' and 'an' are used when referring to something general or non-specific.
- Definite article 'the' is used when referring to something specific or already known.
Rules for Using 'A' and 'An'
- Use 'a' before singular countable nouns starting with a consonant sound (e.g., a boy, a tree).
- Use 'an' before singular countable nouns starting with a vowel sound (e.g., an apple, an egg).
- Silent 'h' makes a word start with a vowel sound — use 'an' (e.g., an hour, an honest man).
Rules for Using 'The'
- Use 'the' to refer to specific or previously mentioned things (e.g., The book on the table is mine).
- Use 'the' with superlatives (e.g., She is the tallest girl).
- Use 'the' with ordinal numbers (e.g., the first prize, the third floor).
When No Article is Used
- No article is used with proper nouns (e.g., Delhi, Ashok).
- No article is used with abstract nouns (e.g., wisdom, beauty).
- No article is used with material nouns (e.g., gold, water, milk) when general.
