Topics in Pronouns

1

What is a Pronoun?

  • A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun in a sentence.
  • Using pronouns avoids repetition and makes sentences sound natural.
  • The noun that a pronoun replaces is called its 'antecedent'.
2

Types of Pronouns

  • There are several types of pronouns: Personal, Demonstrative, Interrogative, Reflexive, Emphasising, and Relative.
  • Each type has a specific function in a sentence.
3

Personal Pronouns and 'It'

  • Personal pronouns are divided into three persons: First (I, we), Second (you), Third (he, she, it, they).
  • They change form based on subject or object role: 'I' (subject) vs 'me' (object).
  • 'It' is used for animals, things, and babies when gender is unknown.
