What is an Adverb?

  • An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
  • It adds more meaning to the word it describes.
  • Examples: She ran quickly. (How did she run?)

Types of Adverbs

  • There are five main types of adverbs: Manner, Place, Time, Frequency, and Degree.
  • Each type answers a different question in the sentence.
  • Interrogative adverbs are used to ask questions (How? Where? When? Why?).

Formation of Adverbs of Manner

  • Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ly to adjectives.
  • If the adjective ends in -e, drop -e and add -ly (e.g., gentle → gently).
  • If the adjective ends in -y, change -y to -i and add -ly (e.g., happy → happily).

Position of Adverbs in Sentences

  • Adverbs of manner, place, and time usually come after the verb or object.
  • Adverbs of frequency (always, never, often) go before the main verb.
  • If the verb is 'to be', the adverb comes after the verb.
