1. Singular and Plural Nouns

  • A **singular noun** refers to one person, place, thing, or idea. Example: cat, girl, book.
  • A **plural noun** refers to more than one. Example: cats, girls, books.
  • Only **countable nouns** have plural forms. Uncountable nouns like water, sugar, advice do not have plurals.

2. Rules for Forming Plural Nouns

  • Most nouns add **-s** to form the plural: cat → cats, dog → dogs.
  • Nouns ending in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x add **-es**: bus → buses, box → boxes.
  • Nouns ending in consonant + y change **-y to -ies**: baby → babies, city → cities.

3. Special Cases and Exceptions

  • Some nouns have the **same form** in singular and plural: deer, sheep, fish, dozen, score, aircraft.
  • Words like scissors, trousers, spectacles are **always plural** and take plural verbs.
  • Cattle and people are **plural in meaning** but look singular; use plural verbs.
