1. Understanding Direct and Indirect Speech
- Direct Speech: The exact words spoken by a person, enclosed in quotation marks.
- Indirect Speech: The reported version of the speech in the speaker’s own words, without quotation marks.
- Reporting Verb: The verb that introduces the speech (e.g., said, told, asked).
2. Rules for Changing Tenses
- If the reporting verb is in present or future tense, the tense of the reported speech remains unchanged.
- If the reporting verb is in past tense, the tense of the reported speech changes to the corresponding past form.
- Universal truths and habitual facts do not change their tense even if the reporting verb is in the past.
3. Rules for Changing Pronouns and Possessive Adjectives
- Pronouns of the first person (I, we) change according to the subject of the reporting verb.
- Pronouns of the second person (you) change according to the object of the reporting verb.
- Pronouns of the third person (he, she, they) remain unchanged.
4. Changes in Time and Place Expressions
- Words like 'today', 'yesterday', 'here', 'now' change to 'that day', 'the day before', 'there', 'then' in indirect speech.
- This change happens only when the reporting verb is in the past tense.
- Words like 'tomorrow', 'next week' become 'the next day', 'the following week'.
