  • Before European arrival, the Inca Empire ruled parts of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, and Argentina.

2. Location and Extent

  • South America is the fourth largest continent.
  • It lies between 13°N and 55°S latitudes, and 35°W to 81°W longitudes.
  • The Equator passes through the northern part, and the Tropic of Capricorn crosses the south.

3. Political Divisions

  • South America has 12 independent countries and 2 dependent territories.
  • Brazil was colonized by Portugal; the rest by Spain.
  • French Guiana is a French territory; Falkland Islands are British.

4. Physical Features

  • South America has five main physical divisions: Andes Mountains, Western Coastal Strip, Central Plains, Eastern Highlands, and Islands.
  • The Andes are the longest mountain range in the world (7,250 km), formed by folding (fold mountains).
  • Mt. Aconcagua (6,962 m) is the highest peak in the Andes and South America.
