1. What Are Minerals and Ores?

  • Minerals are natural substances made of one or more elements found in the Earth's crust.
  • They have a definite chemical composition and are formed by inorganic processes.
  • Ores are minerals from which metals can be extracted profitably.

2. Types of Minerals

  • Minerals are classified into two types: Metallic and Non-metallic.
  • Metallic minerals contain metals and are usually found in igneous rocks.
  • Non-metallic minerals do not contain metals and are found in sedimentary rocks.

3. Important Metallic Minerals

  • Iron Ore: Backbone of industries; used to make steel. Types: Magnetite (72% iron), Haematite (60-70%).
  • Manganese: Used in steelmaking to remove impurities and prevent rust.
  • Bauxite: Ore of aluminium; used in aircraft, utensils, and electrical wires.

  • Limestone: Used in cement and iron & steel industries.
  • Mica: Used in electrical insulators and paints.
  • Coal: Formed from plant remains; used for power generation.
