1. Excretion and Excretory Organs
- Excretion means removal of toxic and unwanted metabolic waste products from the body.
- Wastes to be removed include urea, uric acid, bile pigments, extra water, extra salts, and extra vitamins.
- Urea and uric acid are nitrogenous wastes produced from the breakdown of excessive amino acids in the liver.
2. Human Excretory System
- The renal excretory system consists of a pair of kidneys, two ureters, a urinary bladder, and a urethra.
- The kidneys are reddish-brown, bean-shaped organs situated towards the back of the abdomen.
- Each kidney lies on either side of the backbone at the level of the last two ribs.
3. Structure of the Kidney and Nephrons
- The outer darker region of the kidney is called cortex.
- The inner lighter region of the kidney is called medulla.
- The medulla drains urine into a funnel-shaped structure called the renal pelvis.
4. Urine Formation and Osmoregulation
- Blood enters the kidney through the renal artery.
- The nephrons filter the blood, remove waste substances, and produce urine.
- Waste substances removed include excess water, mineral salts, and urea.
