Photosynthesis

  • Green plants are autotrophs because they prepare their own food.
  • Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants capture solar energy and use it to convert carbon dioxide and water into simple sugars.

Factors Affecting Photosynthesis

  • The three most important factors affecting photosynthesis are carbon dioxide, light and suitable temperature.

Experiments Showing Photosynthesis

  • A variegated leaf such as Coleus has white or yellow patches that lack chlorophyll.
  • In the starch test, only the green parts of a variegated leaf turn blue-black.
  • This shows that photosynthesis occurs only in chlorophyll-containing parts.

Respiration

  • Respiration is the process in which glucose is broken down to release energy.
  • A large part of the energy released is converted into ATP.
  • Some energy is also released as heat.
