1. Introduction to the Atmosphere

  • The atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding the Earth.
  • It extends to a height of around 10,000 km from the Earth’s surface.
  • It protects life from high-energy radiation and the vacuum of space.

2. Composition of the Atmosphere

  • The atmosphere is made mainly of nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, and trace gases.
  • Nitrogen is the largest component of the atmosphere.
  • Oxygen is the second largest component.

3. Atmospheric Pressure

  • Atmospheric pressure varies from place to place and with height.
  • Near the Earth’s surface, air pressure is highest because air is densest there.
  • As height increases, air becomes thinner and pressure decreases.

4. Structure of the Atmosphere

  • The atmosphere has five main layers: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, ionosphere or thermosphere, and exosphere.
  • Each layer has different characteristics and functions.
  • Weather phenomena mainly occur in the troposphere.
