  • The atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding the Earth.
  • It extends to a height of around 10,000 km from the Earth’s surface.
  • It protects life from high-energy radiation and the vacuum of space.

  • The atmosphere is made mainly of nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, and trace gases.

  • Atmospheric pressure varies from place to place and with height.
  • Near the Earth’s surface, air pressure is highest because air is densest there.
  • As height increases, air becomes thinner and pressure decreases.
