  • An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
  • Examples: read carefully, a very careful reader, read very carefully.
  • An adverb may show manner, time, place, frequency, degree, or certainty.

  • Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives: quickly, gladly, warmly, lazily, happily, merrily.
  • Some words have the same form as both adjective and adverb: early, late, hard, long, short, fast, daily, straight.
  • Not all -ly words are adverbs. elderly, friendly, lively, cowardly, and lonely are adjectives.

  • Hard means with effort or vigorously.
  • Hardly means very little, almost not.
  • Hardly ever means almost never.

  • So and such make the meaning of an adjective or adverb stronger.
  • So is used with adjective or adverb.
  • Such is used with a noun.
