  • Sound is a form of energy that produces a sensation of hearing.

  • A sound wave is described by amplitude, frequency, wavelength, and time period.
  • Amplitude is the maximum displacement from mean position.
  • Frequency is the number of vibrations per second.

3. Loudness and Amplitude

  • Loudness is the characteristic of sound by virtue of which a loud sound can be distinguished from a faint sound, both having the same frequency and same wave form.
  • Loudness depends on amplitude.
  • Greater the amplitude, louder is the sound produced.

4. Decibel Scale and Safe Sound Levels

  • Loudness of sound is measured on the decibel scale.
  • 1 dB = one-tenth of bel.
  • Bel is the unit of level of loudness, named after the scientist Alexander Graham Bel.
