1. Force and its effects

  • Force is a push or pull.
  • A force can start motion, stop motion, speed up motion, slow down motion, change direction, or change size and shape.
  • A force does not change the mass of the body on which it is applied.

2. Turning effect of force and moment of force

  • A force can make a body rotate about a fixed point called the pivot.
  • The turning effect of force depends on the magnitude of force and the perpendicular distance from the pivot.
  • Greater force gives greater turning effect.

3. Thrust and pressure

  • Thrust is a force acting normally, or perpendicular, to a surface.
  • Thrust exerted by a body on a surface is the same however it is placed.
  • The effect of thrust depends on the area of the surface on which it acts.

4. Pressure in daily life

  • A sharp pin is easier to push into wood because its area is very small and pressure becomes large.
  • A blunt nail is harder to push in because its contact area is larger.
  • Cutting tools like knives, blades, and axes have sharp edges to increase pressure.
