What is sound?
Answer
Sound is a form of energy that produces a sensation of hearing. It is produced when a body vibrates.
Why is a vibrating body called a source of sound?
Answer
A vibrating body produces sound. Thus, each source of sound is a vibrating body. For example, a plucked string starts vibrating and produces sound.
Why can two persons not hear each other on the moon?
Answer
Sound needs a medium for its propagation. It cannot travel in vacuum. The moon has no atmosphere, so sound cannot travel there.
Which travels faster: sound in iron, water, or air?
Answer
Sound travels fastest in iron, then in water, and slowest in air. Speed of sound: - Iron = nearly 5000 m/s - Water = nearly 1500 m/s - Air = nearly 330 m/s…
What is a longitudinal wave in sound?
Answer
"This wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate about their mean positions, in the direction of propagation of sound, is called longitudinal wave." Sound in air travels as a longitudinal wave.
What forms one complete wave in sound propagation?
Answer
One complete to and fro motion of the strip forms one compression and one rarefaction. Together, they constitute one wave.
State the relation between frequency and time period.
Answer
Formula: f = 1/T Meaning: - f = frequency - T = time period Units: - f in hertz or s^-1 - T in second Quick example: If T = 2 s, then f = 1/2 = 0.5 Hz.
A wave has time period 4 s. Find its frequency.
Answer
Given: - Time period, T = 4 s Formula: - f = 1/T Solution: - f = 1/4 s - f = 0.25 s^-1 - f = 0.25 Hz Answer: 0.25 Hz…
