1. Need for Classification and Early Attempts

  • Classification helps in studying elements in an organized manner.
  • It helps in correlating properties of elements with fundamental properties of matter.
  • It helps in defining the relationship of one element with another.

2. Dobereiner's Triads

  • J. W. Dobereiner grouped some elements into sets of three called triads.
  • The middle element in a triad had an atomic mass approximately equal to the average of the other two.
  • He was the first to show a clear relationship between properties of an element and its atomic mass.

3. Newland's Law of Octaves

  • John Newland arranged elements in increasing order of atomic mass.
  • He observed that every eighth element had properties similar to the first element.
  • This idea was called the law of octaves, like musical notes.

4. Mendeleev's Periodic Table

  • Mendeleev arranged 63 known elements in increasing order of atomic mass.
  • He placed elements with similar properties in the same vertical column and left gaps for undiscovered elements.
  • His periodic law stated that physical and chemical properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic masses.
