1. Water: Basic Facts and Physical Properties

  • Water has formula H2O and molecular mass 18 amu.
  • Water exists as ice, liquid water, and steam.
  • More than 70% of Earth's area is occupied with water, but only about 2.5% of Earth's water is fresh water.

2. Water as a Universal Solvent and Solutions

  • Water dissolves many substances because of its high dielectric constant.
  • Water is called the universal solvent.
  • A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more components.

3. Solubility, Concentration, and Solubility Curves

  • Different substances dissolve to different extents in the same solvent.
  • At 40°C in 100 g water, the solubility of NaCl is 36.5 g and of KNO3 is 65 g.
  • At 20°C, the solubility of KNO3 is 31.6 g and at 60°C it is 63.9 g.

4. Crystals, Hydrated and Anhydrous Substances

  • A crystal is a homogeneous solid of definite geometrical shape.
  • Crystallization is the process by which crystals are obtained by cooling a hot saturated solution.
  • Some salts contain water of crystallization, which is an integral part of the crystal.
