1. Basic Ideas of Reflection

  • Reflection means the return of light into the same medium after striking a surface.
  • A plane mirror does not reflect 100% of the light falling on it.
  • Regular reflection occurs on a smooth and polished surface such as a plane mirror.

  • First law of reflection: angle of incidence equals angle of reflection.
  • Second law of reflection: incident ray, reflected ray, and normal lie in the same plane.

3. Images Formed by Two Plane Mirrors

  • For two mirrors kept parallel, an infinite number of images are formed for an object kept in between them.
  • For two mirrors kept perpendicular, three images are formed for an object kept in between them.
  • For mirrors inclined at angle θ, the number of images depends on n = 360°/θ°.

  • A reflecting surface which is a part of a sphere is called a spherical mirror.
  • Concave mirror is made by silvering the outer surface of a hollow sphere so that reflection takes place from the hollow concave surface.
  • Concave mirror converges parallel rays and has a real focus.
