Card 1Reflection of light

State the definition of reflection of light.

Answer

Reflection of light is the return of light into the same medium after striking a surface.

Card 2Kinds of reflection

What is regular reflection?

Answer

Regular reflection occurs when a beam of light falls on a smooth and polished surface, such as a plane mirror. The reflected rays go in a fixed direction.

Card 3Kinds of reflection

What is irregular reflection?

Answer

Irregular reflection occurs when a beam of light falls on a rough surface such as the wall of a room or the page of a book. The reflected rays spread in different directions.

Card 4Laws of reflection

State the first law of reflection.

Answer

The angle of incidence i is equal to the angle of reflection r. In symbols, ∠i = ∠r.

Card 5Laws of reflection

State the second law of reflection.

Answer

The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal at the point of incidence lie in the same plane.

Card 6Plane mirror

A ray is incident normally on a plane mirror. What happens to it?

Answer

For normal incidence, angle of incidence = 0°. So angle of reflection = 0°. The ray retraces its path along the same line.

Card 7Plane mirror

A plane mirror is 3 cm thick glass plate. Which surface reflects light?

Answer

Light enters through the polished front surface, but strong reflection takes place from the back silvered surface. The back is coated with opaque material for protection.

Card 8Types of image

What is a real image?

Answer

A real image is formed by actual intersection of reflected rays. It can be obtained on a screen and is always inverted.
