1. Basic Ideas About Magnets

  • Lodestone is a natural magnet and is an ore of iron oxide, Fe3O4, found in Magnesia, Asia Minor.
  • The word magnet has been derived from magnesia.
  • Lodestone attracts small pieces of iron and sets itself along a definite direction when suspended freely.

2. Induced Magnetism

  • When an unmagnetised magnetic material is kept near or in contact with a magnet, it becomes magnetised temporarily.
  • The magnetism produced in this way is called induced magnetism.
  • A magnetic pole induces opposite polarity on the near end and similar polarity on the farther end of an iron bar.

3. Magnetic Field and Field Lines

  • The space around a magnet in which the needle of a compass rests in a direction other than the geographic north-south direction is called the magnetic field of the magnet.
  • Magnetic field is a vector quantity.
  • The magnitude of magnetic field at a point is measured by the force experienced by a magnetic pole placed there.

4. Earth as a Magnet and Neutral Points

  • The earth behaves like a huge bar magnet at its centre.
  • The magnetic south pole of the earth lies near the geographic north, and the magnetic north pole lies near the geographic south.
  • The magnetic axis of the earth makes an angle of 17° with the axis of rotation of the earth.
