Upthrust, Buoyancy, and Their Nature
- Upthrust is the upward force exerted by the fluid on a body immersed in it.
- Buoyancy is the property of a liquid to exert an upward force on a body immersed in it.
- When a body is partly or wholly immersed in a liquid, two main forces act on it: weight downward and upthrust upward.
Archimedes' Principle and Its Verification
- Archimedes' principle states that when a body is immersed partially or completely in a liquid, it experiences an upthrust equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by it.
- This principle applies to liquids and gases.
- The apparent loss in weight of a body in a fluid is equal to the upthrust on the body.
Floatation and Conditions for Floating or Sinking
- A body sinks if the maximum upthrust when fully immersed is less than its weight.
- A body floats if the maximum upthrust is equal to or greater than its weight.
- If maximum upthrust equals weight, the body floats fully submerged with apparent weight zero.
Density and Relative Density
- Density is mass per unit volume.
- Density is represented by ρ or d.
- SI unit of density is kg m^-3 and CGS unit is g cm^-3.
