Topics in Linear Equations in Two Variables

1

1. Linear equations in two variables

  • An equation which contains two variables and the degree of each term containing variable is one, is called a linear equation in two variables.
  • The general form is ax + by + c = 0, where a, b, c are real numbers and a, b are not both zero simultaneously.
  • Either a or b can be zero, but not both together. For example, y = 2 can be written as 0x + y = 2.

2. Graph of a linear equation in two variables

  • The graph of a linear equation in two variables is a straight line.
  • An ordered pair satisfying the equation represents a point on that line.
  • Two points are sufficient to represent a line, but if the coordinates of one point are wrong, the line will be incorrect.

3. Simultaneous equations and graphical method

  • When we think about two linear equations in two variables at the same time, they are called simultaneous equations.
  • The solution of a pair of simultaneous equations is the ordered pair that satisfies both equations.
  • For x + y = 4 and 2x - y = 2, the graphs intersect at (2, 2).

4. Elimination method revision from the example

  • For x + y = 4 and 2x - y = 2, adding the equations removes y.
  • After adding, 3x = 6, so x = 2.
  • Substitute x = 2 into x + y = 4 to get y = 2.
