Topics in Trigonometry

1

Basic Trigonometric Ratios

  • In a right-angled triangle, the three main ratios are sine, cosine, and tangent.
  • For the triangle in Fig. 6.2, sinθ = AB/AC, cosθ = BC/AC, and tanθ = AB/BC.
  • These ratios depend on the angle, not on the size of the triangle, as long as the angle stays the same.
2

Reciprocal Ratios

  • cosecθ, secθ, and cotθ are the reciprocal ratios of sinθ, cosθ, and tanθ.
  • cosecθ = 1/sinθ, secθ = 1/cosθ, and cotθ = 1/tanθ.
  • In the triangle form, cosecθ = hypotenuse/opposite side, secθ = hypotenuse/adjacent side, and cotθ = adjacent side/opposite side.
3

Fundamental Trigonometric Identities

  • The three fundamental identities are obtained from the basic ratios and Pythagoras theorem.
  • Identity II is sin²θ + cos²θ = 1.
  • Identity III is 1 + cot²θ = cosec²θ.
4

Values of Trigonometric Ratios for Standard Angles

  • The values for 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° are very important.
  • sin 30° = 1/2.
  • sinθ at 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90° is 0, 1/2, 1/√2, √3/2, 1.
