- The most important architectural feature of the Vedic period was fire altars.

3. Mauryan and Early Historic Architecture
- The Mauryan period lasted from 322 BC to 182 BC.
- Megasthenes described Chandragupta Maurya's palace as an excellent architectural achievement.
- The palace was carved out of wood.
4. Cave, Rock-cut, and Temple Architecture
- More than a thousand caves were excavated between the second century BC and the tenth century AD.
- Famous cave sites include Ajanta, Ellora, and Udaygiri.
- These caves contained Buddhist viharas, chaityas, and mandapas, as well as pillared temples of Hindu gods and goddesses.
