Life of People under the Delhi Sultanate

  • Prophet Mohammad preached Islam in the seventh century AD in Arabia.
  • He was born in AD 571 in the Quraysh tribe of Arabia.
  • He migrated from Mecca to Madina in AD 622. This marked the beginning of the Hijira Era.

Political Background and Mughal Rule

  • The Delhi Sultans ruled from 1206 to 1526. Their dynasties were Mamluk Turks, Khiljis, Tughlaqs, Sayyids, and Lodis.
  • In 1526, the Mughals replaced the Delhi Sultans.
  • The Mughals initially ruled from Agra and later from Delhi till 1707. Their rule continued nominally till 1857.

  • Indo-Islamic architecture developed as a blend of Indian and Islamic styles.
  • Its distinctive features were dome, lofty towers or minarets, arch, and vault.
