3.1 Reproductive Health — Problems and Strategies

  • Reproductive health = total well-being in physical, emotional, behavioural, and social aspects of reproduction (WHO definition).
  • India was among the FIRST countries in the world to initiate national-level action plans for reproductive health.
  • Family Planning programmes were initiated in India in 1951.

3.2 Population Stabilisation and Birth Control

  • World population: ~2 billion in 1900 → ~6 billion by 2000 → 7.2 billion in 2011.
  • India's population: ~350 million at independence → ~1 billion by 2000 → crossed 1.2 billion in May 2011.
  • Population growth rate in 2011 census: less than 2% (20/1000/year).

3.3 Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP)

  • MTP = Intentional/voluntary termination of pregnancy before full term. Also called induced abortion.
  • About 45–50 million MTPs are performed worldwide per year = 1/5th of all conceived pregnancies.
  • Government of India legalised MTP in 1971 with strict conditions to avoid misuse.

3.4 Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

  • STIs = Sexually Transmitted Infections. Also called Venereal Diseases (VD) or Reproductive Tract Infections (RTI).
  • Common STIs: Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, Genital herpes, Chlamydiasis, Genital warts, Trichomoniasis, Hepatitis-B, HIV (leading to AIDS).
  • Hepatitis-B and HIV can ALSO be transmitted by: sharing injection needles/surgical instruments with infected persons, blood transfusion, infected mother to foetus.
