Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Chemical Change and Chemical Reaction

  • If new substances are formed with properties completely unlike to those of the original substances, a chemical change has taken place.
  • Digestion, burning of crackers, respiration, powdered lime added to water, ripening of mango, and iron nails exposed to moisture are examples of changes to classify as physical or chemical.
  • During a chemical change, the original substances lose their characteristic properties.
2

2. Writing Chemical Equations

  • A chemical equation is the symbolic representation of a chemical change.
  • Chemical equations become shorter and more precise when formulae are used instead of words.
  • If no subscript is written in a chemical formula, the number 1 is understood.
3

3. Balancing Chemical Equations

  • All chemical equations must be balanced because atoms are neither created nor destroyed in chemical reactions.
  • According to the law of conservation of mass, the total mass of products must equal the total mass of reactants.
  • The number of atoms of each element before and after reaction must be the same.
4

4. Making Equations More Informative

  • A chemical equation can show physical states, heat changes, gas evolved, precipitate formed, and reaction conditions.
  • The physical states gaseous, liquid, and solid are represented by (g), (l), and (s) respectively.
  • Aqueous solutions are written as (aq).
