Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Properties of Light

  • Light is a form of energy that travels in the form of electromagnetic waves
  • Light always travels in straight lines (in a uniform medium) - these straight paths are called rays, and groups of rays form a beam
  • Light does NOT require any medium to travel - it can travel through vacuum
2

2. Refraction of Light & Snell's Law

  • Refraction is the bending of light when it passes obliquely from one medium to another
  • Refraction occurs because light travels at different speeds in different media
  • Light travels faster in rarer media (like air) and slower in denser media (like glass or water)
3

3. Dispersion of Light

  • Dispersion is the splitting of white light into its component colors due to different refractive indices for different wavelengths
  • White light is composite light containing all visible colors with wavelengths from 400-700 nm
  • Each color has a different frequency and wavelength, and thus a different refractive index in a given medium
4

4. Scattering of Light

  • Scattering is the redirection of light in all directions when it interacts with particles in a medium
  • Occurs when light encounters atoms, molecules, or particles that are much smaller than or comparable to its wavelength
  • The particle that causes scattering is called a 'scatterer'
