Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Basic Concepts: Force and Motion

  • Mechanics is the branch of physics that deals with the effect of force on bodies.
  • Statics deals with bodies at rest under forces. Dynamics deals with moving bodies under forces.
  • Kinematics studies motion WITHOUT considering the cause. Kinetics studies motion WITH the cause.
2

2. Inertia and Its Types

  • Inertia is the inherent property of a body to resist any change in its state of rest or uniform motion.
  • Inertia does NOT mean a body cannot move — it means a body RESISTS change.
  • Mass is the measure of inertia. Greater mass = Greater inertia.
3

3. Linear Momentum

  • Linear momentum measures the impact of a force on a body.
  • It is the product of mass and velocity of a moving body.
  • Linear momentum is a VECTOR quantity — it acts in the direction of velocity.
4

4. Newton's Three Laws of Motion

  • FIRST LAW (Law of Inertia): Every body continues in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.
  • First Law gives definitions of both FORCE and INERTIA.
  • SECOND LAW (Law of Force): Force acting on a body is directly proportional to the rate of change of linear momentum, in the direction of the force.
