Key Topics to Revise

1

Temperature and Its Measurement

  • Temperature is defined as the degree of hotness or coldness of a body.
  • Temperature determines the direction of heat flow – heat always flows from higher temperature to lower temperature.
  • Temperature is related to the average kinetic energy of molecules of a substance.
2

Thermal Energy (Heat) and Thermal Equilibrium

  • Thermal energy (heat) is a form of energy that flows between bodies due to a difference in their temperatures.
  • Heat always flows from a body at higher temperature to a body at lower temperature.
  • Heat is also known as heat energy. SI unit of heat is Joule (J).
3

Effects of Heat Energy – Expansion of Substances

  • When heat is supplied to a substance, it can: (1) raise temperature, (2) change state, (3) cause expansion.
  • Thermal expansion is the increase in dimensions of an object due to a rise in temperature.
  • All forms of matter – solid, liquid, and gas – expand on heating.
4

Fundamental Laws of Gases

  • Three fundamental laws connect pressure (P), volume (V), temperature (T), and number of moles (n) of a gas.
  • Boyle's Law: At constant temperature, P ∝ 1/V (or PV = constant).
  • Charles's Law: At constant pressure, V ∝ T (or V/T = constant). Temperature must be in Kelvin.
