1. Fundamentals of Ray Optics and Reflection

  • Light travels in straight lines in a homogeneous medium (ray optics representation)
  • A ray shows only the direction of light, not its intensity or color
  • Laws of Reflection: (i) Incident ray, reflected ray, and normal are coplanar; (ii) Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection (i = r)

2. Spherical Mirrors - Theory and Image Formation

  • Spherical mirrors are part of a hollow sphere; curved reflecting surface
  • Two types: Concave (converging) and Convex (diverging) mirrors
  • Centre of Curvature (C): center of sphere; Radius of Curvature (R): radius of sphere

3. Speed of Light and Refractive Index

  • Speed of light in vacuum: c = 3 × 10⁸ m/s (constant)
  • Light travels slower in any medium than in vacuum
  • Fizeau's toothed wheel method: first experimental determination of light speed

4. Refraction of Light - Fundamentals and Laws

  • Refraction: bending of light at boundary between two transparent media with different optical densities
  • Laws of Refraction (Snell's Law): (i) Incident, refracted rays and normal are coplanar; (ii) n₁sin(i) = n₂sin(r)
  • Light bends TOWARD normal when going from rarer to denser medium
