3.1 Thrust and Pressure

  • Thrust is the force acting perpendicular to a surface. Unit: Newton (N)
  • Pressure is thrust per unit area acting on a surface. Unit: Pascal (Pa) or N/m²

  • Fluids include both liquids and gases - all flowing substances
  • Fluid molecules in constant motion move equally in all directions

  • Pascal's Law: External pressure on incompressible liquid transmitted uniformly throughout liquid
  • Pressure transmits equally in all directions in confined liquid
  • Demonstrated by syringe with holes - water squirts equally from all holes
