1. Definition and Basic Concepts of Matter
- Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space
- All objects around us - air, water, food, stones, plants, animals - are matter
- Non-matter examples: sunlight, sound, force, and energy (they don't have mass or occupy space)
2. Elements - Building Blocks of Matter
- Elements are the simplest substances that cannot be broken down further chemically
- Each element is made up of only one kind of atom
- There are 118 known elements: 92 naturally occurring and 26 artificially created
3. Compounds - Combinations of Elements
- Compounds are formed when two or more elements combine chemically in fixed proportions
- A compound is a new substance with completely different properties from its constituent elements

- Mixtures contain two or more kinds of particles but are NOT chemically bonded
