Reflection of Light and Laws of Reflection
- Light falling on a polished surface (like a mirror) bounces back — this is called reflection.
- The ray falling on the mirror is called the Incident Ray.
- The ray bouncing back is called the Reflected Ray.
Real and Virtual Images
- A Real Image is formed when light rays actually meet after reflection. It is always inverted and can be projected on a screen.
- A Virtual Image is formed when light rays do not actually meet but appear to meet when extended backwards. It is always erect and CANNOT be projected on a screen.
- Concave mirrors can form both real and virtual images depending on the position of the object.
Spherical Mirrors – Key Terms and Concepts
- A Spherical Mirror is a mirror whose reflecting surface is part of a hollow sphere.
- Concave Mirror: Reflecting surface curves inward (like a cave). Also called a converging mirror.
- Convex Mirror: Reflecting surface curves outward. Also called a diverging mirror.
Rules for Ray Diagrams and Image Formation in Concave Mirror
- Rule 1: A ray passing through the Centre of Curvature (C) is reflected back along the same path.
- Rule 2: A ray parallel to the Principal Axis, after reflection, passes through the Principal Focus F (for concave mirror) or appears to come from F (for convex mirror).
- Rule 3: A ray passing through the Principal Focus F gets reflected parallel to the Principal Axis.
