Topics in Locomotion and Movement

1

1. Types of Movement

  • Human cells show three main types of movement: amoeboid, ciliary, and muscular.
  • Amoeboid movement is shown by macrophages and leucocytes. It occurs by pseudopodia formed through streaming of protoplasm.
  • Ciliary movement occurs in ciliated tubular organs. In the trachea, cilia help remove dust particles and foreign substances.
2

2. Muscle: Structure and Types

  • Muscle is a specialised tissue of mesodermal origin.
  • About 40-50% of adult human body weight is made up of muscles.
  • Muscles show four properties: excitability, contractility, extensibility, and elasticity.
3

3. Structure of Myofibril and Sarcomere

  • A myofibril shows alternate dark and light bands.
  • The light band is the I band and contains actin.
  • The dark band is the A band and contains myosin.
4

4. Contractile Proteins

  • Actin is the thin filament protein.
  • Each actin filament is made of two F actins helically wound together.
