1. Tissue Systems in Plants

  • Plants have three tissue systems: epidermal, ground or fundamental, and vascular or conducting.
  • The epidermal tissue system forms the outermost covering of the plant body.
  • The ground tissue system forms the main bulk of the plant body and includes simple tissues.

2. Epidermal Tissue System

  • Epidermis is the outermost layer of the primary plant body.
  • Epidermis is usually single-layered.
  • Epidermal cells are parenchymatous, compactly arranged, and have a large vacuole.

3. Ground Tissue System

  • Ground tissue includes all tissues except epidermis and vascular bundles.
  • It consists of parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma.
  • Parenchymatous cells are usually present in cortex, pericycle, pith, and medullary rays in primary stems and roots.

4. Vascular Tissue System

  • The vascular system consists of xylem and phloem.
  • Xylem and phloem together form vascular bundles.
  • Vascular bundles may be radial or conjoint.
