Topics in Respiration in Plants
1. Respiration and Gas Exchange in Plants
- Plants need oxygen for respiration and release carbon dioxide.
- Plants do not have specialised respiratory organs, but stomata and lenticels help in gas exchange.
- Gas exchange is easy in plants because most living cells are close to the surface.
2. Glycolysis
- Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose into two molecules of pyruvic acid.
- It occurs in the cytoplasm and is present in all living organisms.
- It is also called the EMP pathway, named after Gustav Embden, Otto Meyerhof, and J. Parnas.
3. Fate of Pyruvic Acid
- Pyruvic acid is the key end product of glycolysis.
- Its fate depends on cellular need and oxygen availability.
- There are three major ways cells handle pyruvic acid: lactic acid fermentation, alcoholic fermentation, and aerobic respiration.
4. Aerobic Respiration and the TCA Cycle
- Aerobic respiration is the complete oxidation of organic substances in the presence of oxygen.
- It occurs in mitochondria in eukaryotes.
- Pyruvic acid enters the mitochondrial matrix and undergoes oxidative decarboxylation to form acetyl CoA.
