1. Growth and Its Nature

  • Growth is an irreversible permanent increase in size of an organ, its parts, or even a single cell.
  • Growth is accompanied by anabolic and catabolic metabolic processes that use energy.
  • Plants retain the capacity for unlimited growth throughout life because meristems keep adding new cells.

2. Phases of Growth and Growth Rates

  • The period of growth is divided into three phases: meristematic, elongation, and maturation.
  • Meristematic cells are rich in protoplasm, have large nuclei, thin primary cellulosic walls, and abundant plasmodesmata.
  • The elongation phase shows increased vacuolation, cell enlargement, and new cell wall deposition.

  • Water is needed for cell enlargement and turgidity, which help extension growth.
  • Oxygen provides metabolic energy needed for growth activities.

4. Plasticity and Factors Controlling Development

  • Plasticity is the ability of a plant to follow different developmental pathways in response to environment or life phase.
  • Heterophylly in cotton, coriander, and larkspur is an example of plasticity.
  • In buttercup, leaves formed in air differ from leaves formed in water, showing environmental plasticity.
