Topics in Cell Cycle and Cell Division
1. Cell Cycle and Interphase
- Cell cycle has two basic phases: interphase and M phase.
- Interphase is the phase between two successive M phases.
- Interphase lasts more than 95% of the total cell cycle duration.
2. M Phase and Mitosis
- M phase is the phase when actual cell division or mitosis occurs.
- M phase begins with karyokinesis and usually ends with cytokinesis.
- Mitosis is also called equational division because the chromosome number of the parent and progeny cells remains the same.
3. Cytokinesis and Special Cases
- Cytokinesis is the division of cytoplasm into two daughter cells after karyokinesis.
- In animal cells, cytokinesis occurs by a furrow in the plasma membrane.
- In plant cells, cytokinesis occurs by cell-plate formation.
4. Meiosis I and Meiosis II
- Meiosis is a reduction division that reduces chromosome number by half.
- Meiosis occurs in diploid cells destined to form gametes.
- Meiosis involves two sequential divisions: meiosis I and meiosis II.
Key Concepts
Central concept: Cell cycle and cell division as the process by which a cell duplicates its genome, grows, and divides into daughter cells
