1. Major Features of Post-Mauryan Art
- Various dynasties controlled parts of the former Mauryan Empire from the second century BCE onwards.
- The rise of the main Brahmanical sects such as the Vaishnavas and Shaivas also marked this period.
- Art developed in many centres across north, south, west, and eastern India.
2. Bharhut Sculpture
- Bharhut sculptures are tall and in low relief.
- They are like Mauryan Yaksha and Yakshini images.
- The sculptural volume is linear and images stick to the picture plane.
3. Sanchi Stupas and Sculpture
- Sanchi is about 50 km from Bhopal.
- There are three main stupas at Sanchi.
- Stupa-1 is presumed to have the relics of the Buddha.
4. Mathura, Gandhara, and Sarnath Schools

- The Buddha image at Mathura was modelled on earlier Yaksha images.
