1. Basic Ideas of Temple Architecture
- Most surviving ancient and medieval artworks are religious in nature because stone structures survived better than buildings made of wood and clay.
- A temple is a sacred space with a principal image of a deity and carefully planned sculptural decoration.
- The main parts of a Hindu temple are garbhagriha, mandapa, shikhara or vimana, and the axial placement of the vahan and dhvaj before the sanctum.
2. Temple Shrines and Main Orders
- Temple shrines are of three kinds: sandhara, nirandhara, and sarvatobhadra.
- Sandhara shrines have a pradikshinapatha.
- Nirandhara shrines do not have a pradakshinapatha.
3. Nagara Style and Important Examples
- The common Nagara tower with a square base and inward-curving walls is called latina or rekha-prasada.
- Phamsana buildings are broader and shorter than latina ones.
- Phamsana roofs slope upward on a straight incline instead of curving inward.
4. South Indian Temple Style and Major Examples
- Dravida temples are enclosed within a compound wall.
- The entrance gateway of a Dravida temple is called a gopuram.
- The Dravida tower, or vimana, is pyramidal and rises geometrically.
