  • Most surviving ancient and medieval artworks are religious in nature because stone structures survived better than buildings made of wood and clay.
  • A temple is a sacred space with a principal image of a deity and carefully planned sculptural decoration.
  • The main parts of a Hindu temple are garbhagriha, mandapa, shikhara or vimana, and the axial placement of the vahan and dhvaj before the sanctum.

  • Temple shrines are of three kinds: sandhara, nirandhara, and sarvatobhadra.
  • Sandhara shrines have a pradikshinapatha.
