What to Focus On

  • A conic section is formed by intersecting a plane with a double-napped cone.
  • Circle, ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola are proper conic sections.
  • Point, straight line, and pair of intersecting straight lines are degenerate conics.
  • Centre and radius fully define a circle.
  • Standard form is (x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2.
  • For centre at the origin, the equation is x^2 + y^2 = r^2.
  • A parabola is defined using a focus and a directrix.
  • The vertex lies on the axis of the parabola.
  • y^2 = 4ax opens right when a > 0.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A circle, ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola are all identified only by how the picture looks, so the exact definition is not necessary.

Apollonius gave the names of all the conics, including circle and ellipse.

A degenerate conic can occur anywhere on the cone, not only at the vertex.
