1. Aristotle’s Fallacy and the Law of Inertia

  • Aristotle held the flawed view that an external force is needed to keep a body moving.
  • Everyday experience can mislead because friction usually opposes motion and makes moving bodies slow down.
  • Galileo studied motion on inclined planes and inferred the law of inertia.

2. Newton’s First Law and Inertia in Daily Situations

  • If a body is at rest or moving with uniform velocity, the net external force on it is zero.
  • The first law explains why a stationary bus passenger lurches backward when the bus starts suddenly.
  • When a bus stops suddenly, the body continues moving forward due to inertia.

3. Momentum and Newton’s Second Law

  • Momentum is a vector quantity.
  • Momentum depends on both mass and velocity.
  • A greater change in momentum in a given time needs a greater force.

4. Impulse and Force-Time Relation

  • Impulse is the product of force and time duration.
  • Impulse equals change in momentum.
  • Impulse becomes important when a large force acts for a very short time.
