Topics in Laws of Motion
1. Aristotle’s Fallacy and the Law of Inertia
- Aristotle held the flawed view that an external force is needed to keep a body moving.
- Everyday experience can mislead because friction usually opposes motion and makes moving bodies slow down.
- Galileo studied motion on inclined planes and inferred the law of inertia.
2. Newton’s First Law and Inertia in Daily Situations
- If a body is at rest or moving with uniform velocity, the net external force on it is zero.
- The first law explains why a stationary bus passenger lurches backward when the bus starts suddenly.
- When a bus stops suddenly, the body continues moving forward due to inertia.
3. Momentum and Newton’s Second Law
- Momentum is a vector quantity.
- Momentum depends on both mass and velocity.
- A greater change in momentum in a given time needs a greater force.
4. Impulse and Force-Time Relation
- Impulse is the product of force and time duration.
- Impulse equals change in momentum.
- Impulse becomes important when a large force acts for a very short time.
