Topics in Work, Energy and Power
1. Scalar Product and the Idea of Work
- The scalar product or dot product of two vectors gives a scalar quantity.
- Work in physics depends on the component of force along displacement.
- If force and displacement are perpendicular, work is zero.
2. Work-Energy Theorem
- The change in kinetic energy of a particle equals the work done on it by the net force.
- For constant force, the theorem follows from the kinematic relation v^2 - u^2 = 2as.
- For variable force, the theorem is written using integration.
3. Work Done by Constant Forces
- Work depends on force, displacement, and the angle between them.
- If displacement is zero, work is zero even if force is large.
- If force is zero, work is zero even if displacement is large.
4. Kinetic Energy
- Kinetic energy is the energy of motion.
- It is always a scalar quantity.
- It depends on mass and the square of speed.
