Topics in Thermodynamics

1

1. Basic ideas of thermodynamics

  • Thermodynamics is a macroscopic science; it does not deal with the molecular constitution of matter.
  • A thermodynamic state is specified by five state variables: pressure, volume, temperature, internal energy, and entropy.
  • Pressure, volume, temperature, and mass are state variables for describing equilibrium states.
2

2. Thermal equilibrium and Zeroth Law

  • Equilibrium in thermodynamics means macroscopic variables do not change with time.
  • Two systems separated by an adiabatic wall do not exchange heat.
  • A diathermic wall is a conducting wall that allows heat flow.
3

3. Heat, work, and the First Law of Thermodynamics

  • A system can change its internal energy by heat transfer or by work done on it.
  • Heat flows because of a temperature difference between the system and the surroundings.
  • Work is energy transfer by mechanical means, such as moving a piston.
4

4. State variables, equation of state, and thermodynamic processes

  • Equilibrium states are described by state variables.
  • For an ideal gas, the equation of state is PV = μRT.
  • At fixed temperature, the P-V curve is called an isotherm.
